WHY YOUR EXHAUST SYSTEM IS IMPORTANT

Your vehicle’s exhaust works by removing unwanted fumes from your engine. It also helps to minimise the amount of noise the vehicle makes, improves the performance of the engine in general while also increasing your fuel efficiency.

Your vehicle’s exhaust is made up of several components. All of these components need to be in working order for the system to operate properly. As you drive, your exhaust’s manifold collects harmful gasses and funnels them into the catalytic converter. The converter then removes harmful elements from the gas such as hydrogen monoxide and carbon monoxide – keeping your engine safe and cooling it down.

If your exhaust system is not performing at its best then it can have other detrimental effects.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY EXHAUST SYSTEM LAST?

Generally speaking, an exhaust system should last the duration of the vehicle - especially in light of most modern vehicles sporting either stainless steel or chrome parts. However, corrosion can often bring a premature end to parts of your exhaust system resulting in them needing to be replaced from time to time to ensure your vehicle runs as efficiently as possible. Other factors that can reduce the lifespan of your exhaust system include hitting obstacles in the road or driving through standing water.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY EXHAUST SYSTEM NEEDS ATTENTION?

An under performing exhaust system is often noticeable due to obvious change in sound / exhaust note. Below are a few examples of how a faulty exhaust system can sound and what it means:

An increase in exhaust noise could signify a hole in your exhaust pipe / back box.

A persistent rattle may mean part of the exhaust is loose or a support bracket has been lost.

A 'tinkling' sound could be a problem with your silencer.

A 'chugging' noise could indicate a possible obstruction somewhere in the system.

A hissing sound often indicates a crack in a gasket, pipe or in the manifold.

A loss of power / engine performance could indicate a faulty catalytic converter.
